A fabulous find and one of our own personal favorites. This is an authentic British Edwardian dinner gong circa 1900 to 1910.
The British Gong has now become one of the most collectible antiques and is highly sought after. They are all very different and designed in many ways. This one has a most enchanting sound and great aesthetic appeal. The wooden mallet is original and still has it's time worn sheepskin covering.
As was the custom in most British Estates the servants used a gong to announce dinner on a day to day basis.
The first footman sounded the gong at 7pm to alert the family and their guests that it is time to go up to dress for dinner.
It was this tradition that became a vital part of the English aristocratic lifestyle and many saw or heard it in play while watching the Downton Abbey PBS Series.
This gong is made of solid brass and has the original rawhide hanger for the gong. In pristine condition.
