150 Year Old Dated Antique Soap Box from B.T. Babbitt’s Soap of New York
dated July 15, 1868. This is a fantastic rare early wooden advertising shipping/display crate from B.T. Babbitt's Soap. It is in great condition considering the age of the piece.

The Babbitts name is embossed on both front and back sides. There is faded paper on one end, and the other end has the stenciled copyright information. On the bottom it’s stamped with Stafford Springs, CT – perhaps a distribution point. And, part of the lid remains making this an excellent display item with lots character. This wonderful early piece of advertising history was discovered at the Brimfield Antiques Market in Massachusetts. These wooden crates were used to display BT Babbitt's soap cakes inside a store. Typically these wooden crates were used to ship merchandise then once they were inside the store, the top was pried off and the merchandise was displayed right in the crate.

Some historical information... Benjamin T. Babbitt (1809-1889) was a remarkable inventor holding over 100 patents. In 1851, he became the first U.S. Individual to manufacture and market soap in individual bars. Within a decade after launching his “1776” brand of soaps, Babbitt became known as a genius in the art of advertising. He rivaled his friend PT Barnum in originality and success, becoming a household name throughout the U.S. His soap was one of the first nationally advertised products in American history and Babbitt helped to coin phrases like "get on the bandwagon," and “get on your soap box.” An absolutely amazing piece of early soap and general store history, and a nice wooden box for the collector.
